Safe & Sound Protocol

ONline for clients in MA, ME, NJ & FL & nationwide for therapists.

Introduction to the Safe & Sound Protocol

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based listening therapy & biofeedback intervention designed to reduce sound sensitivities and improve auditory processing, behavioral state regulation, and social engagement behaviors through filtered music. As a practical application of Polyvagal Theory, the SSP acts as a non-invasive, acoustic vagal nerve stimulator, helping to retune the nervous system to better support connection, collaboration and resilience. The SSP involves listening to specially filtered music through headphones alongside a provider in person or remotely. Suitable for children and adults, the SSP has demonstrated benefits for individuals with trauma, anxiety, sensory processing differences and more.

  • A 5-hour auditory intervention developed and patented by Dr. Stephen Porges, author of the Polyvagal Theory.

  • Designed to reduce sound sensitivity, and improve auditory processing and behavioral state regulation.

  • Activates the client’s social engagement system, helping to accelerate and enhance therapeutic outcomes.

  • Supports physiological state regulation, allowing for greater resilience.

Polyvagal Theory: The Science of Feeling Safe

Developed by world-renowned researcher and Unyte’s Chief Scientific Advisor, Dr. Stephen Porges, Polyvagal Theory focuses on what is happening in the body and the nervous system, and explains how our sense of safety, danger or life-threat can impact our behavior. Understanding Polyvagal Theory gives us a scientific framework that can be applied through physiological, or “bottom-up” therapies, to help change and improve how we feel, think and connect with others.

  • In our initial listening session, we'll focus on understanding your nervous system to tailor the listening experience specifically for you. You'll be presented with options to find what feels most comfortable, and together we'll decide on the optimal listening time and session frequency. We’ll also assess the balance between supported and independent listening that works best for you.

Safety is our top priority throughout the SSP process, and we can adjust the approach based on the needs of your specific nervous system.

Clients may complete one round of the core SSP playlist between 2-18 months.

  • The cost of the SSP is broken into two components:

    1) Subscription to Unyte/ email monitoring: $350/year

    2) Provider time for assessment/ supported listening: $200/hour (this may be covered by your insurance)

I require all SSP clients to meet with me for an initial 1-hour assessment & listening set-up appt. Then, depending on your needs, we may meet for subsequent check-ins & supported listening sessions. If not meeting regularly, I ask that clients going through the SSP send weekly written updates on their progress.

  • If I am in-network with your insurance plan (Optum/United, Point32 Health, Aetna, & some BCBS plans) or you have out-of-network benefits, your insurance will typically cover the cost of our supported listening sessions.

Please note that insurance does not cover the subscription fee & support outside of sessions for accessing the SSP. The additional cost to access the SSP protocol and playlists, & ongoing email support is $350/year.

  • I offer the SSP in several formats to best meet your needs:

    • For EMDR/IFS Clients: The SSP is considered the gold standard of preparation work for EMDR therapy, increasing capacity for the nervous system to desensitize & reprocess traumatic events. The SSP also increases access to self-energy, which offers healing in Internal Family Systems work.

    • Standalone or Adjunct Support: If you’re interested in experiencing the SSP on its own or alongside other treatments, I’m here to offer that as well. If you’re working with other therapists or providers, I’m happy to collaborate with them to ensure a cohesive approach that respects and supports your individual journey.

  • I'm so grateful you're here! The nervous system is the most important tool of our work with clients. I offer a special SSP Consultation Package for fellow therapists for $500 as there is vitality in our ability to be in a connected & ventral place as we do this work. This package includes access to all three pathways of the SSP for up to 12 months. We’ll start with an initial hour-long consultation & education call, and I’ll be available via email for ongoing support throughout your SSP listening journey.
